BEWARE || What Is Really In Our Make Up ? Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone

Hellooo My Lovelies,

Bit of a different post today.

During the summer last year I found myself picking up a copy of the daily mail and I came arcoss an article that was called 'How your wrinkle cream could destroy your skin: The chemicals in cosmetics can trigger severe allergies' click here to read online version. The headline grabbed my attention immediately. The two chemicals in the firing line are Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone. Quite a mouthful I know! Basically these chemicals are preservatives.

The article looks at the story of Jean Clark, who had just purchased Clarins Extra Firming Day Cream for £48. the cream is supposed to leave you with younger looking skin with less wrinkles. But after using it her face was stinging. ‘It was a burning sensation as if someone had thrown acid in my face,’ she says. ‘My skin looked as if I had a bad dose of sunburn - my face was scorched, red and blotchy.' She was quite confused as she had been using Clarins products for a long time! Mrs Clark was not alone in the problems she was experiencing.

The perservatives Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone are found in dozen upon dozen of beauty and bathroom products. Dermatologists say that Methylisothiazolinone is second to nickel in causing soreness and redness and can lead to eczema.

What Does it Do?

Methylisothiazolinone (MI) and Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) are added to water-based products to kill bacteria, viruses and mould. Without preservatives products would go off in two or so weeks of being opened.

For years companies have combined MI and MCI in products. So why the recent problems? Companies have started to use MI on its own and in higher concentrates.

Dr David Orton, of the British Society of Cutaneous Allergy, says: ‘You can become allergic to anything at any time and there will always be someone who will become allergic to a particular ingredient. But over the last couple of years we have seen a growing rise in allergy to MI.’ You can develop them to something that caused no problems a year ago. It is not clear what causes the body to react like this, but once you have an allergy it usually lasts for life.

The key thing to consider here is YOU CAN BECOME ALLERGIC AT ANY TIME. This is really what scared me, I could one day be putting on my foundation and during that day my face could swell up, go red and be incredibly sore.

Allergies happen when ones body identifies a substance as being harmful - a allergen. The stats show that only one or two people in every hundred have skin allergies, but these were produced become 2005 when MI was authorised for singular use.

Because of this scare I have been trying to used natural products and I am reading the label to ensure I do not buy an item with MI or MCI in. Over the next few week I will be reviewing some of these products and seeing if they can offer a good alternative.

You will be gob smacked when how many popular items have MI used, I was.

How To Deep Clean Make Up Brushes

Hellooooo,

I have been using this method to clean my brushes, some cheap and others expensive, now for a while and I have not had any problems with hairs falling out or handles falling off. All the products I use to clean my brushes are normal household. Keeping your brushes clean can help minimise breakout and oily build up.

Before starting you need to combine 1 part extra virgin olive oil to four parts anti-bacterial washing up liquid in a bowl. It is really important to use a anti-bacterial washing up liquid as the whole purpose of cleaning brushes is to get rid bacteria, oil, grease and old make up which has built up during use. The extra virgin olive oil helps to lock in moister.

Step One
Rinse your brushes under warm water, make sure that you are holding the brush downwards to ensure that the water does not hit the glue as it could melt it and the hair will fall out.

Step Two
Dip the brush into the solution then rub it firmly into the head using your palm. Keep the brush head down. Lots of foam should form, this breaks down the dirt on the hairs. Do this to all of the brushes leaving the solution on before moving on.

Step Three
Now rinse the brushes under cold water (if hot water gets into the neck of the brush it could melt the glue holding the hairs in place). Pull the hairs downwards as you are doing this to make sure all of the foam is out. Keep doing this until there is no bubbles and the water runs clear.

Step Four
Once all of the brushes are clean, you need to find a conditioner. If it is good enough for your hair it's good enough for make up brushes. Just work the conditioner through the hairs and keep it on for a while, just like you would do with you hair. At this stage you need to reshape your brushes as this helps the bristles to lay the way the would naturally.

Step Five
Now rinse the conditioner off using cold water.

Step 6
Finally I pop all of my wet brush on a hand towel and cover them with another towel and allow them to dry over night. Larger brushes may take longer though.

Hope you like it

Little Boots Haul

Helloooo My Lovelies,

Today, despite telling myself that I only needed to get my secret Santa present, I got sucked in by the Boots 3 for 2 offer! This offer gets me every time ! Well this what I got ........

Sally Hansen Miracle Cure £9.99 - This is hopefully going to solve all of my nail problems such as breaking, peeling and weakness. You have to apply it every other day I am going to give it a whirl for a few weeks and doing a review with before and after pictures. So stay tuned for that.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum in 52 Vanilla £10.99 - This is a product I have been meaning to try for a while now and I though why not while its on offer. Again I will review this soon.

Soap & Glory Kick Ass Concealer in Medium - I have never used Soap & Glory make up products, but I love their body range so again I thought why not. I tried the tester and it was like a perfect match to my skin colour so I had to have it! This concealer is like perfect for keeping in your handbag or while on the move. It contains two concealers, a lighter one and a dark one. The light one is for under your eyes where as the darker one is for blemishes. Then on the top tier there is a translucent powder. This is great as it allows you to set the concealer. First impressions of this product is great!

NOTD | Bourjois So Laque Glossy Nail Enamel in Adora-bleu

Helloooo My Lovelies,

I brought this nail polish as I needed a final item in a three for two offer in superdrug. You can find it here. It costs £5.99, which is expensive for a drugstore nail varnish I believe. I didn't pay for the item so I did not mind the price.
I have actually used this polish before but in Vert Chlorophylle, this time I am using Adora-Bleu, a pastel baby blue.
Overall I think this polish is great, it gives a smooth hi-shine finish. It is a very bright colour and is probably more suited for the summer. You only need to apply two or so coats, I haven't used a top coat due to the hi-shine finish. I really like the packaging of the product, I think I looks more expensive than say a Barry M Nail Paint. The bottle claims that the varnish lasts for ten days some of my nails lasted up to 8 days but my left index finger started to chip after 4 days but still 4 days is good considering that I am always typing away, washing up and cleaning.
I would recommend this nail varnish even for £5.99.

Do you have any of the Bourjois So Laque Glossy Nail Enamel? What's your favourite colour ?

Skin Care || Month One: No7 Beautiful Skin Range

Hellooo :)

Since the age of 13 (6 years ago now) when I first started to wear make-up, I have really suffered with oily skin and bad breakouts. I wanted to do a series of posts, four over a course of 4 months, to track the results of my current skin care routine to see whether it makes any improvements to breakouts and oiliness.

Well this is my naked face as of 24th November 2013, really ugly photos I am sorry. As you can see I am suffering with a bad breakout along my jaw line and chin as well as have blackheads on my nose, cheekbones and forehead. I really hate my skin and it does get me down, I have tried so many different over-the-counter and prescribed remedies for acne but nothing really helps. I feel like my skin is still stuck in my early teens even though I am coming up to 20 and it really gets me down!

Looking after your skin is very important with the correct skin care routine you can minimise breakout and prevent dry flaky skin. I am going to walk you through the morning and evening skin routine I am going to be using. I am sticking to just one brand of skin care, so I can really evaluate properly the effect it is having. This brand is No7 beautiful skin, it is for for normal/oily skin.

Step One

Every other day I use the Purifying Exfoliator in shower, I massage this into my skin and then wash off with a flannel. Exfoliators are very important to use as the help to unclog pores to reduce breakouts and impurities in the skin. I only use this in the mornings.

Step Two

After my shower I use a foaming cleanser, this doesn't smell overly pleasant, but removes dirt and make up well. The bottle states that it dissolves make-up and helps to tighten pores. I just massage this into damp skin and wash away with my flannel once again. In the evenings I would also remove my eye make-up with the Simple Eye Make-Up Remover, this is a great product I really like Simple. It is non-greasy and good on even waterproof mascara.

Step Three

I use the Cleansing Water, this essentially does the same thing as the Foaming Cleanser but I find it easier to know all of my make up is off when using this. I squirt a couple of pumps on a few of cotton pads and sweep them over my skin, I repeat this until the cotton pads are staying white. This ensures all the make-up and dirt has been removed. This is a lovely product doesn't leave you skin greasy.

Step Five

Next I use the Blemish Defence Serum, I have to be honest I am not sold on serums yet, but I like the sound of a anti-blemish one. I massage this over my clean skin and allow it to absorb. It feels really odd to begin with but I am getting used to it.

Step Six

Next I use either the Beautiful Skin Day Cream in the morning or at night I use the Night Cream. These are just moisturisers. I literally just smooth this into my face and neck after the serum is all soaked in.

Step Seven

I use the No7 Protect & Perfect Eye Cream, I really like this product it wakes me up around my eyes and its really moisturising. I have been using this for a while now and am really liking it. I just dot this around my eyes then gently massage it in. This kills if you get it in your eye!

Step Eight

I use the Beautiful Skin Rapid Spot Rescue. To be honest I hate the product it's thick and to gel-like. I leaves a shiny patch over the blemish, which make-up doesn't stick to.

Once a week I like to have a little pamper evening and during this I like to apply the Beautiful Skin Purifying Mask. This is a thermal mask so it heats up and feels amazing. You apply it to damp skin and opens up the pores and draws out impurities. This seems a really good product.

The next post on my skin will posted around the end of December. Hopefully there will be a huge improvement!

Lots of Love

TAG || I'm A Beauty Blogger ... Get Me Out Of Here! Week Two

Hellooo My Lovelies,

Hope you are all well :)
Its Monday which means its time for I'm a beauty blogger get me out of here! It's week two which means we have a new set of questions, here we go.

1) Firstly congratulations! You won last week’s bush tucker trial and your reward is a makeover from a professional make-up artist. What look would you choose and why?

I would have a neutral smoky eye. I love this look and think it can be worn day or night time.

2) It’s time to wash – ok so it’s not in a luxury shower or a bath but you do get a choice of one soap/shower gel to use. What would you choose and why?

Easy! Soap & Glory Sugar Crush. If you have not used this shower gel, go now and get it. Its the most amazing smelling thing in the whole world. It is made with lime oil and has a freshly-squeezed Sweet Lime fragrance. You have to try it!

3) Today is the arrival of a new camp mate, yay! You get to decide, it can be anyone this time. Who will you choose and why?

This sounds totally cheese but my Mum, she is like my best friend, I'll have someone I can tell anything, to cook with, wash up with and we would look after each other.

4) It can get a little boring in the jungle and you’re feeling sluggish. What one fitness exercise would you do?

Probably something yoga or pilates like. because I can take my time to do it, I am not going to become overly sweating and hot on camera and its a great way to stay in shape.

5) How would you create your own jungle fashion style?

Hmmm I don't know. This is tricky there isn't exactly a lot you can do with red shorts, a tank top, walking boots and a tan shirt!

6) What is your favourite Australian product and why?

Does Aussie Shampoo and Conditioner count? Because I would defiantly choose that I love the smell of it.

7) Good news, the camp has won the treasure chest hunt! In need of something sweet, each camp mate wins their own cupcake. What would yours be?

Lemon and poppy seed cupcake (like the muffin in Starbucks). I love the muffins in Starbucks!

8) Challenge – bush tucker trial number 2, ‘the jungle hair & beauty salon’. You’re sitting under a vintage hair dryer and instead of hot air being blasted out you are greeted by 10,000 creepy crawlies. Which creepy crawlies would you detest the most and which ones wouldn’t you mind?

I would hate it to be big spiders, but I wouldn't mind the tiny little spiders, think they are called money spiders. I hate big ones but don't mind the small ones.

Hope you liked the answers, check out week threes post next monday for a new set of answers :)
